This volume is set in a large area bordered by the Massif Central to the northeast and the Pyrenees to the south, crossed by large rivers.
The Tarn, Aveyron, the Ariege and the Garonne river course have shaped the landscape by their erosive power.
Within these spaces geological rub a wide variety of soils that express strong identities: influence of limestone (Quercy), stepped terraces, ocean hills (Volvestre, Lomagne), vertical limestone cliffs and perched villages, wheat fields (Lauragais), orchards and vineyards, forested foothills of the Montagne Noire, tormented Plantaurel edges (with the highest rated point of the book: the Pouech, 703 m).
The 30 routes proposed and described in this guide are staged between 3:45 for shorter (Forest Sorèze; Maurens, the Sauna and Rotis; Lake Cammazes and Rigole; loop Plagnole and Forgues) and 6:00 for longer (and Puycelci Grésigne; between Bruniquel and Montricoux; the Ariège valley, and between Auterive Grépia), with a maximum altitude of 650 m. They are within a maximum radius (as the crow flies) of 80 km around the Capitol.
